Building The Ruins Of The Temple Of God

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “It may seem marvelous to the remnant of this people at that time, but will it seem marvelous to me?” declares the LORD Almighty.

                                                                                   Zechariah 8:6

Whenever I feel discouraged waiting upon a promise from God, I like reading this above verse because it gives such an assurance that even though the circumstances say its impossible to receive that promise..my Lord is so confident in His word and will make it happen no matter what. Today, let this verse be a rhema word for all those who wait upon His promise.

Let me briefly describe the context of this verse. Haggai and Zechariah were prophets during the time when the people of Israel were in exile. The people  showed disobedience and ignored the temple of God and as a result they were scattered to the nations and suffered foreign oppression. But when the prophets started to reveal  the condition of their hearts towards God, they listened to them and started the work on the Temple which was ignored in the past. During the time of prophet Zechariah, the temple was almost complete and the prophet is sharing God’s heart towards His people in response to their obedience. Even though it mainly points to the future of Jerusalem in the Millennium,  it has a greater impact on every believer’s life when they are willing to obey and take the step to rebuild the ruins of one’s own temple of God.

I would encourage you to read the whole chapter to understand the devotional better. God is promising many things to His people who are willing to take the initiative to rebuild the relationship with Him even in the middle of unfavorable circumstances.

He is passionate about you (verse 2)

God says, “I am very jealous for Zion; I am burning with jealousy for her.” Jealous is a very strong word. It often has a negative vibe to it. But it is an outcome of a very strong emotion of passion. Here we see the God is passionate about His people. He is more than ready to do anything and everything for His dear ones.

He would love to dwell among you and me(verse 3)

There is nothing greater than the presence of God living within one’s heart. Can you imagine the creator of this world dwelling within you? Its pretty amazing isn’t it? If you carefully examine the old testament , we can see that God could not stand acts of disobedience from His own people. There is a verse in the Bible which says obedience is better than sacrifice.. and through the life Jesus Christ, we understand that God was well pleased with Him being obedient even unto death. When you and me choose to obey God …listen to His leadings in life…there is a firm promise that He’ll choose us to be His dwelling place. And that presence is assured even during our rainy days..How beautiful!!

He promises a life of fulfillment(verse 4)

Verse 4 says, “Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each of them with cane in hand because of their age.” The staff in their hand does not mean an age of weakness. It portrays a stage of fulfillment in one’s life. How often do we work and work and say that our labor is in vain. We feel that completeness or fulfillment in our efforts only when its blessed by God.

He promises a place of safety (verse 5)

“The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.” This is written during the time where the people of Israel were living a life of fear. It was never a safe place to live. There were threats from all corners. People would let their children to play outside only when there is security. They lived everyday in fear. Are you living everyday in fear? Do you feel anxious about your future? Do you expect threats from all around? You will feel safe and secure only when you enjoy the presence of God. When you do…life may not be without problems…but still you feel the warmth of His care..He is the place of refuge..a strong tower and a hiding place for a believer.

I would like to continue this devotion another day.Right now, His promise might seem too difficult for you considering all the negative circumstances..But God says that if it seems difficult or beyond imagination for you…does  that mean its impossible for me?? God has always been concerned about the rebuilding of His temple…the renewal of that spiritual man within you. He wants you to take the effort to lay the foundation of it upon the rock..Jesus Christ. Once your attention is changed from your circumstances to the temple of God…there will arise a change in your circumstances that you thought would be stumbling block in your walk with Jesus. God is willing to pour out His promises when you show that one step of obedience.

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. Thank you once again, Rani. This message uplifts those who wait upon the Lord. It is awesome to know that the God whom I serve is a jealous God and He will continue to deliver His children. It is so wondeful to know that He has already made the path leading through the sea and His ways through the mighty waters though His footsteps are not seen by those of us who wait upon Him. Praise God.
