I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.
The other day, God was showing me the importance of asking His counsel for every step of our lives. I was reading 1 Chronicles 14 verses 8-17 and God directed me to King David who asked God’s counsel before going for a battle. I wondered, “After all David is a king and battles are part of their everyday lives..some they win..some they lose..Knowing that God has blessed him and has given him special anointing…why did he ask God every time he fought a battle..He would have known that victory is already given to Him”
Yes..victory was definitely God’s plans for these battle against the Philistines. But we read that David asked God , "Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?" The LORD answered him, "Go, I will hand them over to you." There is no question of doubt if God says yes and so David went with great courage and victory was his. David acknowledged his victory as God’s breakthrough and worshipped Him in that place and named that place..BAAL PERAZIM..meaning ‘the God of breakthrough’.
One thing that amazed me form that scripture is that the battle was not over with just one victory. They raised against David once again. This time he did not think that the philistines could not stand up against him because God has already given him a victory against them. He asked God’s counsel the second time..And God gave him direction and guidance in this new battle.(verse 13-17).
IF David being a King asked God’s counsel for every battle he faced, how often should we ask God’s guidance in our every day affairs. I feel that the problem with us is that we do not consider our everyday affair as a battle..we think that we are able to handle every small and big thing that comes against us. But whether we realize it or not..every thing that comes against us is a battle..a battle against good and evil.…That conversation over the phone with your friend will end up in talks that may not be pleasing to God…That harmless gesture might have caused a bad impression on others and ruined your testimony about Jesus…
Like David, we might have just won a victory against the same enemy. Another battle..is it possible? A man of God who is anointed from heaven is a target for the enemy always. So satan can show up in different forms…fighting against you..His main aim is to defeat you completely and take you away from God’s blessed list..because he knows for sure that if you are blessed..you are not going to stop there…you are going to be a blessing to many others…And that is a double damage. So the enemy sends one battle after the other.
Did you notice that the guidance from God for each battle was different? David could receive those different directions from God only because he asked God every time he faced one battle. He never thought that the enemy is the same and so the tactics should be the same and there is no need for a special counsel from God.
Today, let us ask God’s counsel for every step of our lives…big or small…casual or important, familiar or not so common steps of life. Victory is ours…but counsel and direction in the battle is from God. When we surrender our will to God and expect His counsel for every little thing in life…like David, we will be able to worship God in Baal Perazim. Do you know this God of breakthrough? Your victory is on its way.
