Receive The Springs Of Water

She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” Then Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

      Judges 1:15

There are few women in the Bible that I adore a lot. Ruth, Esther, Acsah, Hannah and some others too…Even though very little is mentioned about Acsah, she portrays some important characteristics that God will want to see in His child. So for today’s devotion, let us read Judges 1:11-15. We understand that Acsah was Caleb’s daughter. Caleb was one among the 12 spies who were sent to the promised land by Moses. When all the others had a negative report about the land they were about to possess, only Caleb and Joshua had the faith that they will be able to inherit the land that they were promised by God.(To know more about Caleb, you can read Have Faith And Receive The Inheritance)

If Caleb had that strong faith and character even at the age of eighty-five, I’m sure that his daughter Acsah was bold enough too. Caleb promised to give his daughter Acsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher. Othniel, Caleb’s younger brother took it and so Acsah was given to him. Now, the land that was given to her was Negev, a desert. Acsah did appreciate the inheritance given to her. But at the same time, she was concerned about the life in that land. She knew that to make her inheritance fruitful and productive, she needed the continuous supply of living water.Whom do you think she approached to? Her father , Caleb. She knew that if her father gave her Negev, he will surely give her the springs to irrigate that place too.

As soon as Caleb saw his daughter getting off the donkey, he knew that she was determined about something. So he asked her, “What can I do for you?”. He saw that confidence in her eyes. That boldness which made her ask for the springs came from the relationship they shared. She must have said in her heart..”My dad will do anything for me”. And so she approached Caleb and received a double portion. He gave her upper and lower springs. In those days, the provision of springs/clear water was considered to be a luxury. Achsah received her inheritance in three folds…the land of Negev, the upper springs and the lower springs.

What characteristics do we see in her? First of all, we see that she had a wonderful relationship with her father. She had the confidence that if she asks , he will give her. Another thing that I like about her is that she never complained about the inheritance that was given to her. She never said..”Father, what you gave me is a desert and I cannot live there”. She knew she could do something for that land and make it fruitful. And instead of leaving the responsibility to her husband, she herself took the courage to go out-of-the-way to ask her father for some favor. I believe that Achsah was a woman of wisdom and a responsible wife. We read in the later chapters of Judges that Othniel became the judge of the people of Israel and they experienced peace for 40 years until his death. I have no doubts that Achsah was the woman behind his success.

Today, are you worried about the inheritance that is given to you? Do you say that it is dry and not productive? What efforts are you taking to change the dryness that you experience in your life? You might be feeling dry in your spiritual life, unproductive in your career, not fruitful in your family life. Do you feel dryness all around? Instead of complaining what we are given, let us take the responsibility to do the best for our inheritance. Let us take all the efforts to go to our Father, the Almighty God and ask for the springs that will remove the dryness of our soul and everything around.

Some of us do not complain about our dryness, but compromise with what we have and try to live with it instead of finding a way to provide the living water that it lacks. We forget that we have a Father who is able to provide immeasurably more than what we ask or imagine. We forget that He is just waiting for us to approach him and ask him the blessing that we lack. Our Abba Father is right there..asking us “What can I do for you, my child?”. But we receive not the upper springs and the lower springs only because we do not ask.

Let us not be satisfied with the inheritance that we have right now. Claim for the living water that will turn the dryness of our lives to life and fruitfulness. Do not leave the responsibility to someone else. If it is your family life that is lacking the living water, then please do not say, “Let my husband take the first step”. Take the challenge of going to your Almighty Father. You know your relationship with Him. Have the confidence of a daughter and run to Him for the heavenly springs. IF its your job that is causing the dryness in your life, do not complain about your boss. Take your concern to your Father..He is waiting to give you springs ..the upper springs and the lower springs. Our heavenly Father knows that we need the lower springs to make us fruitful in our earthly life in this world…and the uppers springs, the spiritual blessings to prepare us for the heavenly place that we are going to share with Jesus Christ in eternity. So let us approach our Father in confidence and  boldness and claim the springs of water. If Caleb, being an earthly father, gave his daughter what she asked in double, how much more will our Heavenly Father provide for those who plead Him….Immeasurably more…more than we ask or imagine…According to the riches in glory..Amen.

God Bless,
