The Inner Circle Of Prayer

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer…

        1 Peter 3:12

For today’s devotion, I would like to take you to Mathew 26:36-46. There we see Jesus going to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. He has gone to the garden many times before , but this time it was different because He knew in Spirit that He was nearing His crucifixion. He told His disciples to sit there while he went a little further to pray. Jesus took Peter and the sons of Zebede with Him and moved a little far from the other disciples and shared them the burden of His heart;. "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."Then He went a little further from that close circle of disciples and prayed unto His Father.."My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

We read that Jesus came back and saw them sleeping and asked Peter,"Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. But the third time when He returned from His prayer with His Father, He was so confident about God’s will and was strengthened in His soul for that crucifixion.

While meditating this scripture, God told me about three circles of prayer. One is an outer circle of disciples…They knew that Jesus was in distress, but they did not know His burden. There was a second circle of disciples, not many but very few, who knew His heavy heart. They knew His pain, His aches and also the very need for a prayer support. Yet due to their own limitations, they could not watch out and pray with Him. And most importantly there is yet another circle of prayer…in that prayer circle…there is only two persons involved…You and Your Father. Only in that circle of prayer will you know the Will of God. Only there will you be strengthened in your soul. Only there on your knees will you be able to pour out your heavy heart…Only there will you receive the confidence to face the coming hours of challenge.

We might have a group of people who understands our prayer request, but a chosen few who very well know our heart..There might be times when even this closest circle of friends forget that hour of need…but if you have that inner circle of prayer…a prayer time alone with your God…you will be strengthened…no matter how many times you have to go there in prayer…each time you come out, you will have the confidence of God’s will in your life and also the courage to face the next hour of challenge.Today, may you be strengthened with the presence of our Almighty Father in your inner circle of prayer.

God Bless,

Rani John
