Be Still And Know God

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
                  Psalms 46:10

Being still before God is something that I am trying to learn for many years. I cannot say that I have successfully perfected that lesson, but I’m sure that God has given me a number of training lessons in that subject. Hopefully, one day, I will rise up to my Master’s expectation.

In the above verse, God asks His people to be still. What does that mean? To be physically aloof from all the responsibilities of life? No, let us not misunderstand the verse that way. It means to leave the matter to God…Not because you are not able to do it, but because you know someone who can do better than you or anybody else. But most of the time, what I have noticed from my life is that, being still happens when all the other doors are closed and you have no other expectations from anywhere else and at that point of time, you just wait and be still for God.

It is very easy to say that I believe in God when everything is favorable to you. But our faith is tested when the world around us is crumbling. When the oceans rise and thunders roar, is it possible for us to be still and trust God? If it is something impossible to do, God will never command us to do it. How can we do it?What God spoke to me from this verse is that..being still and knowing God are two interconnected factors of this lesson. Only a believer who has personally experienced who God is in his life can be still. And only when you learn to be still, you will know more about God. You are able to stand still in the midst of trials…not because of a self-made confidence, not because you are the most composed person in the face of trials, not because ‘you have seen it all’…but because you know who God is.

My daughter is really scared of thunder. When she hears a slight roar of thunder, she will run to me, jump to my lap and hug me tight. When fear creeps into her mind, my presence gives her a kind of security. She knows very well that her mom will not leave her alone and will hold her tight. Just like that, the knowledge of God gives us the confidence to trust in Him alone…no matter what happens.

When we face a great challenge in life and are constantly troubled by closed doors, we feel lot of emotions….fear, weakness, doubt, helplessness. With all these emotions raging in our mind, how is it possible to be still before the Lord.

When you are faced with fear, remember how God delivered the people of Israel when they were closed in the desert by the army of Pharaoh and the red sea. They feared that they are going to die in the desert. In their imagination, they could not see a way through the waters. But God did the unexpected for them. Next time, when you fear, remember the verse…”Do not fear, I am with you”.

When you face doubt in life, think about the God who worked beyond the principles of life and gave Abraham a son, at the age of 100. IF He has promised something, He is able to do it for you in spite of what you think. The world might say that it is impossible, but He says ‘there is nothing impossible for me’.

When helplessness creeps into your mind, remember your God who saved the young Hagar from her helpless situation in life. She was sent to the desert by her master, with her only son and just a pitcher of water and when the heat of the desert tried to take away the life of her son, God saw her tears and opened a new spring for her.

Next time, when you have to be still and wait on the Lord, think about who God is and  what He has done in the past. Find out the verses from the bible that will speak to the feelings of your heart and speak out those verses loud so that all your senses will hear it. Above all, ask God to help you to be still in the midst of the disaster.

In Him,

Rani John
