Dig Some New Wells Too…

Today’s thought is a continuation of yesterday’s devotion. To understand the context better, please feel free to read the post Re-dig Those Old Wells. In Genesis 26, we read about Isaac reclaiming those old wells his father had dug. The Philistines had stopped all of them by filling them up with dirt. Isaac found those old wells, took the dirt out and brought it back to its purpose..not only that, he named them their original names that his father had given.

In this spiritual place that we are in right now, we see many old wells that are stopped and without purpose. Our forefathers had paid the price and took the effort to plant them in this promised land. Its our responsibility to reclaim them to its original stature. But do not be satisfied with this old wells alone. Let us see what Isaac did in the promised land.

If we read Genesis 26, verse 19 to 22, we understand that Isaac was not satisfied with his father’s wells. He dug new ones in that promised land. Because the herders of Gerar quarreled over the waters of the first well he dug, he named it Esek meaning dispute. He did not want to fight with them even though he had all the resources and might to do that. He moved on and dug another well. They quarreled over that one also. So he named it Sitnah meaning opposition. Isaac did not give up and he dug another well and no one quarreled over it. So he named it Rahaboth, saying, “Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

Are we in the promised land, very well satisfied with the waters of those old wells? Are we saying..”Oh this is more than enough for us”?? God would not want us to be in the promised land depending on the provisions of the past..He do not want us to be stagnant and satisfied with whatever we have right now..He want us to crave more and dig new wells. New ideas, new visions, new opportunities…new ministries.

Digging new wells is not that easy..It takes effort, time and money. You may come across oppositions from all sides. The enemy might claim the waters that you have found. But do not be discouraged. Never give up…dig a new one. Just like Isaac you might have to dig wells named Esek and Sitnah…but there is a well named Rahaboth in the near future.

Your past efforts might be named failure, opposition or dispute or fruitless…but a new venture is coming named..blessing…room to live .. enlargement. If God has brought you this far, He is faithful enough to bless you in everything you do and make you a blessing to many others. So dig those new wells and pour out the living waters for many and quench their thirst.

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. This is so beautiful and encouraging, Rani! I love how He pours encouragement out of you! You are like a well of the Lord’s. 🙂
    love, deb

  2. Thank you so much for the encouraging message, Rani. May God bless you. I am not yet in the ‘promised land’. May the God of hope fill me with all joy and peace as I trust in Him by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is surely a warning that once I reach the ‘promised land’, I should not relax but must be digging ‘new wells’.
