Are You Following Him At A Distance???

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. (Psalms 1:1)

For today’s devotion, I would like to take your attention to a much familiar passage from the Bible, Mathew 28:58-75. The other day, while I was reading that scripture, Holy Spirit reminded me the nature of a back sliding behavior that could happen even to a believer.

Let me explain the context a little bit. Jesus is about to be crucified. A great multitude with swords and clubs came from the high priest and elders to get hold of Jesus and they took Him to Caiaphas. In verse 58, we read that Peter followed Jesus at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard and he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.

When the chief priests and the elders said false testimony about Jesus and they blasphemed against Him, Peter remained there in the courtyard. They spat on His face and struck Him with the palms of their hands….still Peter remained in the courtyard. Remember, this is the same Peter who took the sword and struck the chief priest’s servant when they came to get hold of Him. (John 18:10). A girl saw him at the courtyard and said, “This man was with Jesus”..and Pater denied. Then another girl met him outside the courtyard near the gateway…This time he denied with an oath. Why didn’t he go back to the other disciples? Peter remained there in the courtyard near the gateway, far from Jesus…He sat with people who were trying to accuse Jesus…and stayed there much longer than he should be…So the third time, when the people accused him to be a follower of Jesus….he began to curse and swear.

Did you notice the transformation in Peter? Just few hours back this whole incident, he was ready to do anything and everything for Christ…His passion for Jesus was visible in his actions…Then what happened all of a sudden?

Holy Spirit reminded me that this could happen to you and me. We could be in our mountain top experience with Jesus at one moment and at the denial stages in the next moment. Back sliding is not sudden…its always a gradual  process. We see Peter following Jesus…but at a distance…That is one of the main reasons for back sliding in a believer’s life….We think that we are following Him…but we are not in the same pace as Him…we are at a distance from the Lord.  Then the next step is to slowly be among those who ridicule Jesus or to be in the wrong crowd. In the beginning, you will feel that you are different from them, but then before you realize, you will trace the characteristics of the people you associate with.

At one moment you are at the courtyard…much more closer to Jesus, then in the next moment, you are on your way to the gateway…more away from Jesus. The longer you remain in the wrong crowd, the more your faith will be questioned. See the subtle changes in his denial itself…At first Peter simply denied the girl’s question…Second time, he denied with an oath…and the third time…he denied with a curse.

Where are we in our walk with Jesus? Are we following Him at a distance? Are we associating with the wrong crowd? Are we there more than we ought to be? At the end of the75th verse, we read that Peter went out and wept bitterly. There could be times like this in our lives too…but if we are willing to cry out and ask Him repentance, Jesus is ready to embrace us in His unconditional love and walk with us.

God Bless,
