Obeying Even When Your Past Experiences Says Impossible

I have been meditating on the topic obedience and has shared few thoughts about it last week. For today’s devotion, I would like to continue on the same topic and share with you another act of obedience mentioned in the Bible. Please feel free to go back to the previous posts to get a better understanding on this  topic.

Obeying Even When Your Past Experiences Says Impossible

In Luke chapter 5, we see Jesus preaching by the Lake Gennesaret. He saw two boats by the water’s edge and since there was a big crowd listening to Him, He got into one of the boats belonging to Simon and asked him to put out the boat a little far from the shore and started preaching to the crowd.

Jesus knew that Pater and his fellowmen had been working hard all night and had nothing. So He asked him to put out the boat into the deep waters  and let down the nets. Now , Peter is a great fisherman..This has been his job for many long years..No one has to teach Peter the art of fishing..Its in his blood and he knows the waters very well.Peter might have thought, “Who is this man asking me to cast down the nets deep into the water? Is he a fisherman? Does he know anything about fishing? From my past experiences in fishing…this was one of those days in which you return with empty nets..”

But listening to Jesus  while washing his nets, Peter knew that this man who is preaching has something in Him that makes him to obey whatever He says      and  just because of that one reason..Peter said, “Because you says so, I will let down the nets”.

Peter only had a small encounter with Jesus before obeying Him. He didn’t know that Jesus was the son of God and He has come down to save the world. Peter, at that time had not received any revelations about the new life he is going to receive through Jesus. Yet,he obeyed Jesus…even when all his past experiences in fishing said otherwise.

How about you and me? We say that we know Jesus very well … we  claim to be a      Christian  for many years…But when it comes to obeying Him completely, we think twice…We think about our past negative experiences and are reluctant to obey His word.

Today, what is He asking you to do…to TRUST HIM ?? Your past experiences might be saying ‘its impossible’…or  ‘its going to be another failure’. Your symptoms might be saying that you are not healed…when Jesus says “Through my stripes you are healed”..Are you ready to obey Him completely? If so, you will receive a great catch just like Peter. Something like never before…something so abundant and overflowing…something that shows the glory of God…a miracle. And the world will see the results of your obedience. He is your Master and there is nothing in your life that you knows better than HIM…So obey Him no matter what.

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. Umm, so, i don’t even know you but stumbled across your blog one day. Thank you for this post! It was like ouch, but in a really good way, because it spoke right into some things I’ve been struggling with for a very long time. Mistrust, because of past experiences. The Lord has been very merciful and patient with me, and moved me a lot since I first put my trust in Him. Praise God!! But i know i still have a long way to go.
Thank you, this was a little in encouragement along the way 🙂

    • Thank you Amber for your comments…Holy Spirit always works His wonders…All glory and honor to Him and Him alone…

  2. I’m like Amber, and this fits right in with something He is working on right now. Thank you so much for being His voice to me! God bless you as you obey Him too!
    love, deb

    • Debbie,

Word of God always speaks to me before writing…this was something for me too…We always tend to depend on our past experiences rather than His word….and always end up in an empty net like Peter..But I’m glad He is so faithful and patient with me…Thank u once again for your comments..

      God Bless,
