Let God Be Your Exceedingly Great Reward

Have you ever felt that there are lot of compromises involved when you decide to live a life pleasing to God? You cannot just live your neighbor’s life when you are a child of God….you cannot talk like your worldly friend…you cannot choose the lifestyle of your colleague…you cannot just grab every opportunity that the world offers for our better future…There is always a clause attached to every choice that we make and that is to be in the perfect will of God. And I have to say, its not often easy to live a Christian life….but always worth living…because the reward is great and everlasting.

I was reading from the book of Genesis the other day and was greatly touched by the decisions Abraham took in order to be a child of God. In chapter 13, we see Lot being separated from Abram. When Lot was given the choice to select the land in which he was supposed to live the rest of his life, he got up and looked for the best…the valley of Jordan which was well watered and like the garden of the Lord….He chose the best what the world could offer. I believe that his decision was not difficult at all…There was no confusions, no dilemma, no delays…He just lifted up his eyes and saw the best and the decision was easy…He did not even had a second thought about his choice..whether its the will of God or not?

Abram’s choice was completely different. He did not choose for himself…rather, God chose for him. The land and its boundaries…everything was selected for him. Abram may not have received the best of Jordan as Lot, but he got the prefect piece of God’s will for him.

Later in the next chapter we see another incident where Lot is being captured by few Kings of the land. When Abram heard about Lot’s condition, he gathers his people and rescues Lot from those Kings. When Abram returned victorious, the King of Sodom offered him his share and we read in verse 22,“I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’

Abram could have taken the share offered by the King..He could have been richer according to the standard of this world in a short period of time…His  better future was just a choice away. Yet He chose to be in God’s prefect will than to be in the world’s best opportunity. May seem foolish to lose this great opportunity that knocked on his door…but wait till you see God’s reward for Abram for all his decisions well rooted in God’s prefect will. In Genesis chapter 14, we read God establishing a covenant with Abram. Can you imagine the creator of this world making a covenant with a mere man, one of his creations. I love the first verse of this covenant..

“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

What more do you need? To have God himself as your exceedingly great reward…its just more than having this world to yourself…its like having the greatest provider at your service just to meet your needs…And God offered Himself to be the greatest reward…for all the choices he made to be a child of God…for all the opportunities he missed just to be in the will of God, for all the compromises he made to follow the heart of God.

Dear child of God, you might have made compromises in the past to be a Christian, you might have taken decisions which might seem foolish according to the world’s standards, you might have missed many ‘bests’ that the world had offered just because you felt that its not what God wanted for you…you might have seen your friends and families grabbing the best of this world while you wait for God’s prefect choice to be revealed in your life…Its all worth it..because very soon there is going to be a chapter in your life too where God is going to establish a covenant with you..A covenant to be your EXCEEDINGLY GREAT REWARD. And that day is not very far…So keep on making the right decisions according to the prefect will of God.

God Bless,

Rani John
