Faith As Small As A Mustard Seed

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

            Mathew 17:20
The other day, I received an email from my college friend after long years. In that mail, she had mentioned how God speaks to her everyday and she had casually mentioned an incident that happened with her. Few days back, when she was cooking with mustard seeds, God whispered to her saying, “If you have even the faith of a small mustard seed, you can move the mountains”. I love when God speaks to us through the simple things of life….things which we can relate to. It is really amazing how that friendly email spoke to me and made me think about mustard seeds.

God has used ‘mustard seed’ to describe faith as well as to compare it with the kingdom of God. How does this small seed took a place in God’s word? what is so special in this seed that even Jesus compared it with the kingdom of God. If you compare it with all the other seeds, it is the smallest among them. But there are some characteristics that makes it different from everything else. Today’s devotion is about mustard seed and when you realize its potential regardless its size, you will understand why Jesus used it to describe faith.

Mustard seed is whole from within and not hollow.

This seed even though very small is hard enough that it is difficult to break with simple hands. That is mainly because, it is not hollow from within. Anything that is not strong from within can easily be destroyed. In my imagination, if you cut the mustard seed even to 100 pieces, you will see it full and whole, even though it is just similar to a dot in size. No wonder God compared it to our faith. Let it be as small as a mustard seed, but if it is whole and complete, then it can do wonders. Do we have that kind of faith? We often dream about big faith performing great miracles. But Jesus says that if your faith is so strong from within, nothing can destroy you and prevent you from receiving the miracles.

Mustard seed has the great potential to grow into a large tree.

It might be the smallest seed, but when planted in the right environment, it can even grow to a big tree. So the size of the seed is not a hindrance for the heights it can be reached. Most of the time, we don’t realise what our simple and strong faith can do. We underestimate the potential of a complete and firm faith. Looking through the gospels, we understand that Jesus was always moved by faith. And whoever planted that seed of faith, got the chance to see the results. Looking at the obstacle, you might say that it is impossible to remove it from your life. Change your focus to Jesus and see how big He is and that will help you move that big mountain of problem from your heart to somewhere else which will never bother you anymore. You know how..because the greater one is within you.

Mustard seed does not get influenced by the other seeds around.

You might find this really interesting. Someone who is a great gardener might understand this more clearly. I read from the internet that, there is something like companion planting. This means that certain kind of vegetables and plants can be planted together, because they might benefit each other. But there are some plants that can never be planted together as they influence the growth of the other. For example, a tomato plant is very sensitive to water and a watercress needs its roots to be immersed in water. They both cannot be paired in planting as one’s environment will destroy the other. Certain plants cannot be planted near a black walnut tree or even near its roots because they will take the toxins produced by the walnut tree. However a mustard seed can be planted anywhere with any other plants. It will not take the characteristics of other plants. It has a greater meaning when compared to our spiritual faith. How often are we influenced by others in our surroundings. But a person with a faith as small as a mustard seed will not be affected by others. Their lack of faith, negativities or even their way of life should not influence your characteristics as a child of God.

Think about these characteristics and compare that mustard seed with your faith. Remember God does not look for big faith, but simple and strong faith. A faith that will always point to the cross alone. Next time, when you take the mustard seed, ask God to make your faith perfect and whole like that small seed that has a great potential.

In Him,

Rani John
