Waiting Near That Empty Tomb

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

                 John 20:17-18

I know I have written many times from the same scripture, but God had been teaching me recently one great truth that the Word of God is so fresh and full of meaning that no one can extract it at once and comprehend it completely. No matter how many years later, the same scripture will have a new meaning when applied to one’s life and will affect each one differently depending upon the way the Holy Spirit interprets the truth individually.

The other day, while facing a situation in our life, God revealed to me a great truth from this familiar passage. And I believe that this thought is for many of you who are still lingering in those hopeless situations , waiting to see God’s promise in your life.

In the book of John, chapter 20, we read about Mary Magdalene who came to the tomb of Jesus, very early, even while it was dark. Seeing that the big stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty, she ran to the disciples to tell them all about it. The disciples came to the tomb and saw what she said and they left to their houses, but she stayed back. Mary stayed there weeping looking into the tomb. She might have come to the tomb, that early, thinking that she could do the necessary arrangements for the burial of her Master’s body. She might have thought that she could wipe away the blood from all His bruises and apply oil on them. Or she might be there just to have  another glimpse of her Lord and Master. No matter what her desire was…she stayed back…

When the disciples decided to go back home and move on with the next hour of their lives…she decided to stay back..While it was unsafe for a woman to be alone near a tomb which had Roman soldier’s protection…she stayed back. When she had the choice to go to her fellow sister’s houses and talk about the whole incident and mourn about their great loss..she decided to stay back. Martha, where are you staying? Near a tomb? Don’t you know that its a place of hopelessness? Don’t you know that there is no chance of life there? Don’t you know that its dark and is of no use staying back? Why don’t you go back and think about something else?….but she stayed back.

Do you know what she received because she decided to do out of the ordinary? She had the first opportunity to see Jesus after His resurrection. Something that the disciples missed because they decided to move on. They surely did see Him later, but Mary got the first privilege to see the resurrected body of Christ. Mary stayed there thinking that she could carry the dead body of Jesus. She never thought that the dead body will be heavy for her to carry…all she knew was that she was so passionate to see her Master. When she expected to carry a heavy dead body and do the necessary arrangement for His funeral, she received the wonderful opportunity to see the resurrected body of Christ and carry the most hopeful and victorious news…that Jesus is resurrected….only because she stayed back.

Are you there at the tomb, at that hopeless situation? How long you have been there, you yourself do not know. You seem to be staying back, while all your friends have moved on…they have all thought about alternatives…but you are still there, holding onto your passion…staying back to receive what you have hoped for. You have been there in spite of your fears, your anxieties, your negative circumstances…still hoping…still waiting. Let me encourage you my dear…if you stay back for your passion, for your long waited prayer request…for your promise…you will see the most wonderful vision that others have missed…you’ll receive more than what you have asked or imagined…and God will send you to others with a great purpose..with this great truth that your long wait is worth it.

God Bless,

Rani John
