“Be Opened”

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!" ). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

            Mark 7:34-35

The other day, we had a prayer meeting and the preacher spoke to us from Mark 7 about the healing of the deaf man. As I was reading from the same scripture today, God started revealing to me few other thoughts which I would like to share with you.

Let me explain the context a little bit for better understanding. While Jesus was in Decapolis, some people brought a man who was deaf and mute, in the presence of the Lord. They expected that Jesus would put His hands on him and heal him. But instead, we read that Jesus took him away from the crowd, put his fingers into his ears. He also spit and touched the man’s tongue. Then Jesus looked unto heaven and said “Ephphatha” which means, “BE OPENED COMPLTELY”. Immediately, his ears were opened and his tongue loosened and he started talking plainly.

Many a times, we have a pre-determined expectation of God’s deliverance in our lives….just like those people who assumed that Jesus was going to lay hands and heal that man. Sometimes, the deliverance, healing or touch from the Lord may not be that easy and very straight as we think.

We see here that Jesus took this man away from the crowd. There are many miracles mentioned in the Bible where Jesus has healed the sick in the crowd..Then why not this time? If we are different, then our plans and purposes are different and the ways of our deliverance too. For some deliverance to happen in our lives, God expects us to be away from the crowd…to be in solitude…to be far away from all our dependencies…to be separated from the world which offers us a false comfort that drifts us away from the complete dependency of God. Are you there…away from all your relationships that you valued most? Are you taken away in solitude from the crowd? Don’t be discouraged…This solitude will help you focus on Jesus and Jesus alone. Because next time you go back to the crowd…you will be different…a completely changed person.

Sometimes, the deliverance that we crave for may be a painful process…not that easy as the laying of hands…It might be little more difficult like putting the finger into one’s ears…It is all the more difficult when you are humbled in that process of deliverance. Who will like someone’s spit on your tongue? Our ego, our identity, our attitudes, our emotions…all these are pruned well during such deliverances. Everyday you humble more..without asking questions and learning to accept the method of deliverance, no matter whether its according to one’s likes or dislikes.

But the most important thing after all these pruning process is that there is a time when Jesus will look to us and say “BE OPENED”. And at that word, everything that was closed so far…spiritual, physical and emotional…will be opened. Not just partially…but completely. Are you there in that step by step process of deliverance? Away from the crowd, going through painful and humbling pruning experience? You are almost there..Do you hear Him say “BE OPENED”? Come along with me in this journey ahead which is going to be completely different….because now we are not the same…now we hear more from Him and have a testimony to share..with the crowd.

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. Yes Rani, I’m in that step by step place, away from the crowd. It’s humbling. It’s like you write these just for me at times, but I know He is using you for many. And I’m so blessed that He is! Thank you sweet one, for going through the process with Him, for us! love, deb

  2. This talks directly to my situation too. When our Lord calls us out of the crowd we may feel embarrassed. I am going through an ‘isolated experience’, separated from the crowd that are busy concentrating on promotions, excelling in job performance, financial gains, investments, social acceptance, etc.,. One important thing that I have learned is that when you are here, your most important concern is waiting upon your Lord. This causes me to spend the bulk of my time thinking about Him. This surely is an “Ephphatha” experience to open up completely to the Lord.
This is a lovely sharing, Rani. May God enable you to hear from Him and speak out. Remember your breakthrough is coming soon!.
