But Only If You Believe…….

Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

            John 11:40

This weekend was a tough one for me. But I’m glad to say that my God has strengthened me well by preparing me in advance for these testing times. On Friday night, in sleep, this thought about Lazarus kept speaking to me. Little did I know that God was preparing me as well as strengthening me to hope for a day of God’s glory.

Since we all know the story of Lazarus, I do not want to explain the context, but draw your attention to the thoughts of four different set of people regarding the death of Lazarus…I would encourage you to read John chapter 11 to understand the thought much better. Lazarus is sick and Jesus is somewhere else.  Mary and Martha informed Jesus about their brother’s condition..but Jesus stayed there two days more. Now, let us consider these people and their thoughts..

Jesus: He being the owner of life, knew that this sickness will not end up in death and so He said to his disciples.."This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” But did Lazarus really die? Yes he did. Where was God’s promise when he died? God does not consider any negative circumstance of life as the end of His promises..It is we who think that God and His promises cannot act beyond those worst circumstance of life like death..Even when things happen against God’s promises…there is still hope my friend…you know why…because in Lazarus life thats what happened..He died..and that was against the promise….while we saw the promise buried at the tomb, Jesus saw him raised from dead…

Disciples: They could not see Jesus’ purpose behind His journey back to Judea where Lazarus lived. All they cared was about their safety. So they asked Him,"But Rabbi,a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?" When He said that He is going to Judea to wake up Lazarus who is asleep…they in their carnal mind thought that God spoke about natural sleep and replied.."Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." Even after clearly saying to them about Lazarus death, Thomas, a disciple told the rest of the disciples…"Let us also go, that we may die with him." Are we like those disciples who were really cold about someone else’s problems? Are we so much caught up in our own issues of life that we do not consider other person’s need..not that important???

Mary and Martha: They are the two sisters who are actually in need…they are the ones who need to be comforted…they are the ones who knew that if Jesus would have been there..this tragic event would not have happened in their lives…But what about now?? Jesus is there right now…Cant He do something for them there? They did not have that faith of today…though they proclaimed their faith about tomorrows..Martha knew that if she asks anything, He will be able to give her…she also knew that his brother will rise again on the last day…but she failed to believe that Jesus could raise him from dead TODAY. She had even placed limitations upon God’s hand of miracle for them…four days of deadness can cause bad odor…Can God act beyond that??

Spectator: They are sympathetic towards the condition of the sisters…They followed them wherever they went..But they could not impart the living hope into their hearts and strengthen them…They too asked.."Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

Today, I do not know in which group you are in…IF you are like Martha and Mary, facing one of the greatest sorrows in life…let me encourage you to take one step forward and think differently…”Jesus…we know that your delays does not mean that they are the end of hope…We know that in our current situation..YOU ARE HERE WITH US..and thats more than enough…Though everything that happens around is against God’s promise…still there is hope..because whenever my chances of possibilities end..there begins God’s opportunities for His mighty miracles”.

Are you one among those disciples? Then let us take that bold step of reaching out for others and be a source of encouragement and support for them in their need, instead of being so self-centered. IF you are one among those spectators who have already witnessed God’s miracles…then let us impart what we have experienced from Him as a ray of hope and strength to the one in need.

No matter where you stand…Jesus is the same..forever..The same Jesus who wept seeing the agony of Martha and Mary…is standing next to you…He is asking you…”Where have you placed it? Your sorrows…your hopeless situations…where have you kept them my dear??I do not care…how many days, months and years have passed….I do not care if the situation is beyond the worst..I do not care of you have placed big stones in front of them saying that..”No more hope”. All I have to say…is call out its name….it will come to life…bonds loosened…But only if you believe…”

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. God is still on action for those who believe. He is faithful. Keep the faith and hope, and trust. Answer is at hand.
Thank God for you, Rani, for the inspirational devotion out of your devotion.

    • Thank you…Yes..He is faithful even when everything around is not…He is the only hope that we all cling to and thats the reason why I love Him…

  2. Rani,

I believe…. Come quickly Lord Jesus!

    • Gladwell,

I’m with you Gladwell…waiting for Him to come and deliver me…

      God Bless,

  3. Thank you for this encouraging message. I have been praying for one thing for the past 27 years because of Luke 18:1-8 that tells I should pray and not give up. There is nothing to boast about those 27 years because He gave me life and breath to pray. I placed my need in Jesus’ hands and waiting. Thanks Rani, for affirming, He is faithful in His promise and He will do it.

    • Thank you for visiting….I admire your hope and faith in God…that stands firm even after all these 27 years of waiting…I myself is in that waiting season…but there are times that I have lost hope….but God has strengthened me and helped me stand still in Him…I pray that you will recieve your promise at His perfect time…

      God Bless,

  4. Re: we all know the story of Lazarus…

But maybe not as well as we think. As with the Noah report, many who ‘know’ of the account think that Noah had just two pairs of every animal on the ark, in spite of the fact that the plain text of scripture lets us know that there were SEVEN pairs of the clean animals, but just two pairs of the unclean animals. has a free Bible study that compares scripture with scripture in order to highlight the facts in the plain text of scripture that are, likewise, often overlooked about Lazarus. This study cites nothing but the text of scripture, so the search for truth is not distracted by debates about this-or-that NON-Bible source. You may want to weigh the testimony of scripture that the study cites regarding this “friend” whom “Jesus loved” and may find it to be helpful as it encourages bible students to take seriously the admonition “prove all things”. Hope it helps.
