Be A Blessing To Many In Need

The seven years of abundance in Egypt came to an end, and the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the other lands, but in the whole land of Egypt there was food.

            Genesis 41:53-54

According to the book of Ecclesiastes, there is a season for everything…a time for joy, a time for mourning. In the same way, Egypt had a season of abundance and a season of famine. But because of one man’s wisdom, though there was famine in all the other lands, there was food in the land of Egypt. God was with Joseph and He gave him the wisdom to handle the necessity of the land and thereby making Egypt, a centre of attraction to all the other lands who went through that terrible season.

Now, you might say that this was all God’s work to fulfill His promises regarding Joseph. And it is true. For his brethren to bow down to him, Joseph had to be in that position. Not only that,God used this great famine and also Joseph’s position as the ruler of Egypt to bring the people of Israel to the land of Egypt. Like I said yesterday, everything was part of God’s master plan. But one thing that intrigued me was that in this Master plan about Israelites, God also considered other people of the land…He made Joseph to be a blessing not only to his brethren..but also to many other nations including the Egyptians in that time of famine.

During the time of abundance, God gave Joseph the wisdom to collect as much grain as possible so that he had more than enough…more than he could measure…during the time of need. When all the neighboring lands suffered, Egypt had lot of food. When the famine became so severe, Joseph opened the storehouses of Egypt and started selling the grain to his people as well as to others in the neighboring lands.

While reading through this passage, God gave me a thought which I would like to share with you. Are you like Joseph? Do you have the God-given wisdom to store up the spiritual food when there is an abundance so that you can offer them to others when there is a great need? Usually, we have the tendency of taking our provisions granted when we have them in abundance…whether it is material things or spiritual matters. We often neglect the need to save money when the economy is in its boom and suffer its consequences when there is an economy crisis.

God gave Joseph the wisdom to foresee the next seven years of great famine. So he stored up beyond measure when there was everything in abundance. Let us be like Joseph and store up God’s spiritual assets when everything is well and good so that we don’t have to go in search of them when we are in a famine.  Instead let us be a blessing to many others so that they will be satisfied from our storehouses. Let us store all that spiritual food, His love, His patience, His wisdom…and everything that He offers so that we can help out someone else who is in terrible need.

You have gone through a season of abundance so that you can help someone else in their famine. So let us not take our provisions granted and let us ask God to give us His wisdom to act accordingly so that we will be a blessing not only to our brethren, but to people around. People from neighboring places came to know about Egypt, only because of this one person’s wisdom. With God’s help, let us be that Joseph in our neighborhood so that many will be satisfied spiritually through all the efforts we took to fill up those heavenly storehouses in our season of abundance.

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. I love this, to store up for others! God bless you Rani! love in Jesus, deb

    • Thank you Deb…God Bless and have a great weekend.

  2. Rani, This reminded me of John 14:25-26 when Jesus told His disciples – “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” When we read scripture and store up knowledge of the treasures of Heaven, the Holy Spirit will remind us of the appropriate “treasure” or verse when it will benefit spiritually those with whom we speak. Peace, Linda

    • Linda,

Thank you for that scripture and your insight regarding this subject…Holy Spirit is our wonderful councelor and he reminds us about scriptures and gives us the revelation underlying that scripture so that we can help someone else in need at the right time.
      Have a great weekend…
      God Bless,

  3. Hi Rani!

This message was God’s answer to my prayers. For sometime now I have been going through this phase in my life where I was not able to understand why God was letting certain things go on in my life forever without any change. Through this message God has reminded me that He has given me this downtime to help me learn more about the word of God and come closer to Him so that in the future I can use my spiritual knowledge to be a blessing to the people around me. God bless you!

    • Nidhi,
Thank you so much for your encouraging words…To know that these devotions are helping someone in their spiritual life is the most rewarding thing for me…I can understand what you go through…have been in many of those places myself…But this phase is for a reason…You might not understand the depth of it right now…but looking day you will say…Everything worked together for good.
May God give you greater revelations of Him in this season…so that you will be a blessing to your family, friends and everyone who comes along your life. You will never be the same, once this phase is over.

      God Bless,

  4. Rani,
What a wise and generous lesson. I agree with the message here as we are to use our storehouses not nly to feed those of our kind (Christ followers), but to show kindness to everyone. The small kindness you show today may be the last nudge they needed to become a follower. God Bless and have a great weekend.

    • Thank you Jim…Let us fill up our storehouses when it is available..because a famine is coming..and let us be a blessing in our place…to touch our family, friends and everyone around…

      Have a great weekend..God Bless,
