Have You Read Your Bible Today??

But the word of God continued to increase and spread.

          Acts 12:24

After starting a blog, I have come across many other bloggers who use this media for encouraging people and for sharing the good news. And I have wondered many times..that even after so many people preaching and meditating on the same Bible, its truths have never come to end…Each person who share the word of God has his own style and the Holy Spirit has instilled lot of variety in us so that every time we share the Word, it seems new and inspiring even though we have heard it several times. And that is  the beauty of BIBLE.

Its a privilege to have the Word of God with us..to read, to mediate and share it with others..Many times, we take such things granted in our lives mostly because everything is easily available to us. Today, I would like to encourage you to read the Bible everyday..Let it be like an inevitable part of you. We live in high tech world where there are many media to hear sermons, read devotions and meditate on them..But let not any of those, distract you from reading your Bible. Let all these devotional blogs and sermons and websites help you the extra help you need to be closer to Jesus. But they should never replace your personal time with the word of God. I would like to share a story which one our pastors forwarded to me. It shows what reading the Bible will do in our lives.

An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning, Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his BIBLE. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could. One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I tried to read the Bible just like you but I don’t understand it , and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the BIBLE do?

The Grandfather  quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.” The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You will have to move a little faster next time” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket and he went to get a bucket instead.

The old man said, “I don’t want a bucket of water, I want a basket of water. You are just not trying hard enough”, and he went out to watch the boy try again. At this point, the boy knew that it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was empty again. Out of breath, he said, “See, Grandpa, it is useless!”.

“So you think it is useless?” The old man said, “look at the basket”. The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a old dirty coal basket and now was clean, inside and out.

“Son, that is what happens when you read the BIBLE. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Jesus in our lives”.

Both the grandfather and the boy did read their BIBLE everyday of their lives.

Have you read your Bible today? We may not understand every word written in it…we may not be good in remembering the order of the 66 books in the bible  or by hearting Psalms23…but do not miss an opportunity to read the Word of God..Carry a small bible in your bag…read it, meditate on it..let that be a part of you.Allow this book to change you..inside and out.

God Bless,

  1. Rani,
That is a great story, and a very applicable one at that. Living in the scriptures daily will change you from the inside out. Many times I have to read something three times to understand it, and take notes to boot, but it will sink in, you may not be able to quote it, but you will get the message. Thank you sister!

  2. How I thank God for His Written Word. I was just telling my husband the other day…what would my life be…if I didn’t know God or His word and His promises? I am afraid even to think. Thank you for calling our attention to do that which every believer ought to…READ AND STUDY THE WORD…and find God’s answers for life problems.

You are a blessing. Keep well in Him.

    Love, Gladwell

  3. Let me. tell you readers, The Bible (THE BOOK) is not just for reading. News paper, magazines, periodicals etc. we read and throw into garbage. But THE BIBLE IS NOT JUST FOR READING BUT FOR MEDITATION. Psalm 1 verses 2&3 we read “But his delight is only in the law of the LORD: and in His law he meditates day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivulets (rivers) of water that brigs forth its fruit in its seasons, and iots leaf shall not whither, and all which he does shall be blessed.” When we meditate the WORD of GOD it brings fruits and blessings and so many other benifits. So let us meditate the Word Of God, Read also Deuteronomy ch.6:6-14.
May God make you more fruitful, Rani & all readers.

  4. Wonderful devotion as always! faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God.
