Be Strong And Very Courageous

Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “ I am the LORD your God,  Who teaches you to profit,  Who leads you by the way you should go”.

                 Isaiah 48:17

As soon as I finished my post graduation, I wanted to start a career. Still remember the first interview that I attended. The first round of interview was not that tough. Though every round that I passed made me closer to the career that I had longed for years, the challenges that they made me face in each session was so nerve-racking. Finally, I reached the last session of the interview and was very nervous like a preschooler at her first day at school. I still remember sitting outside the room waiting for the final session and talking to my Lord, “Jesus, I’m so close to my dream job and I want this so badly, but I do not want to go inside without you today..I want you to hold my hand while I sit in front of that panel”. When they called my name, I said, “Come on Jesus , Lets go”. And all through that interview, I held my fist closed as though I’m holding my Lord’s hand. And you know what the Panel told me that day..They said, “The other candidates are so close, but we feel a different level of confidence in you today. So you are hired.” The difference they saw was ‘my Jesus’.

Have you ever noticed that the outcome of most of the challenges we face are based on the confidence and the assurance that we possess? But , for a child of God, where does this confidence come from?  Education? Experience? Assets?. I would say, our confidence and strength is from the Lord…His presence and guidance can make you different from anybody else. His anointing and blessing can make you successful, no matter how hard your challenges are. We read about Joshua in the Bible and how God strengthened him to take up the greatest challenge of his life…being the leader of the Israelites after a successful legend…Moses.

In the book of Joshua, chapter 1, we see Joshua about to face his greatest challenge. He must have been young when he started his journey from Egypt. He had seen all the miracles God did through Moses. Joshua might have looked up to Moses for all his leadership qualities. He was a witness when Moses parted the red sea. He had seen the radiance of Moses’s face when he descended the mountain after receiving the ten commandments. He had adored the courage Moses showed in all the battles they had to face. And now the people of God are waiting on the other side of Jordan, mourning for the death of Moses..their effecient and anointed Leader. A question kept repeating in Joshua’s heart, “What next?”. Moses, before his death had blessed Joshua for his new role as the leader of the Israelites. But Joshua was scared of the unknown, terrified of the great responsibility and unaware of the reaction of his people. He did not feel the assurance of God’s presence in his challenge until God spoke to him and strengthened him. God knew Joshua’s heart and touched all the areas of his anxiety and encouraged him in his challenge.

 God promised new hope
They were mourning for Moses on the other side of Jordan. But now it was time to move on..So God said, Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites.

God promised success

Joshua was so scared to take up the task as he knew very well how succesful Moses was. So God said, “I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”

God promised victory

Since Joshua was scared about the other side of Jordan he was about to face, God strengthened him by promising him victory in everything he did. Joshua 1:5 says “No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life”.

God promised His presence

Joshua knew that Moses was succesful only because of the presence of God in his life. God saw that longing in his heart for God’s presence and promised him to be with him everyday of his life.  “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

God promised strength

The task ahead was not simple and God knew that Joshua cannot handle it without His strength. So Gos promised his strength and encouraged him in his distress.”Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous.”

God promised His guidance

God gave Joshua the law of Moses as the manual for God’s guidance and promised him that he will be prosperous and successful if he carefully obey His word, every moment of his life. “Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Our God promises all of these to every child of God as we face the challenges of life. The law given to us is the Word of God and if we carefully obey it and meditate it everyday of our lives, He promises us to be victorious in everything we do. He promises us His strength and encourages us that His presence alone can do wonders in our next big steps. As we face the trials of each day, let us be encouraged by this God who was the greatest strength in Joshua’s life. Do you hear him whispering..”Be strong and courageous…for I am with you and will give you every place where you set your foot”. If you do hear him, trust me, victory is yours.

In Him,

Rani John
