God’s Favour On You

So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah. She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough. Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!”

    Ruth 2:17-19

When we look at the story of Ruth, we understand that Ruth came into the fields of Boaz, by mere chance. But that changed the destiny of her life. If she came there as a gleaner, asking favour from the owner of the field; at the end of the story, she became the owner of that field. Ruth did not know Boaz before and she never had an idea of his nature until she experienced his favour in the field. It just happened that she did not end up in any other field. Boaz showed care and concern towards her and even asked the men to purposely drop sheaves for her so that she can glean them. Favours were falling purposely for her.

Now how was the attitude of Ruth towards this special favour? She humbled herself all the more before him. She felt that she is unworthy to receive this extra attention from Boaz. We read that in verse 10, At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?” It just happened that we too ended up in the kingdom of Jesus. We could have gone astray and reached any other place…Jesus showed His favour on us..even when we were not worthy to receive them. Sheaves were dropped purposely for us too..Not only that we received favours from Him, we were made heirs of His possessions. What a great privilege!!

What is so special about Boaz and His field? We read that Ruth after gleaning till evening had gathered an ephah of barley. It is almost 35 liters or above 40 pounds. Can you imagine a gleaner who follows after the harvesters gathering that much of Barley in a day. One thing is for sure…Boaz’s fields were always overflowing. Another thing is that, Ruth was able to collect that much because of the generosity of Boaz. If you look at the food she was given at his field, we can understand that she was given a generous amount of it..so that she could eat full and take the rest to her mother-in-law. Looking at what she brought back from the field, Naomi was surprised and asked Ruth “Where did you glean today?, Blessed is the man who took notice of you”. Naomi understood that Ruth ended up in some field where the owner was really kind. Later she understand that this man is none other than Boaz, the nearest kinsman to their family.

Where are you gleaning today? People around you will be able to know you were in the right place, looking at what you carry at the end of the day. Io spite of all the challenges you faced that day, if you come back with a cheerful heart, people will say..”You were at the right place..at Jesus’s presence. When you are overwhelmed with trials and troubles and still  have a tremendous hope about tomorrow, then they know that ‘God is your strength’. When you are at the end of the rope and yet you see doors opened for you, then it means that you have ‘Jesus as the way’. When you are interested in satisfying the spiritual hunger of others and take all the opportunities to share what you have recieved..then it means that you were at the right place…at Jesus feet. And that is the benefit of being at the nearest Kinsman’s field…You have every spiritual blessings,  beyond normal measures…in abundance so that after you are satisfied, you have plenty enough to share.

Though we are unworthy for His favours, He redeemed us to be His own. No one else would do that for you and me. He makes sure that everything around us works in favour of us while we are in His field. Some unexpected sheaves and grains may fall in front of us while we are there. But this grace falling on purpose for us are meant to be shared..Do you know any christians who are unfulfilled and unsatisfied? It is our responsibility to direct them to this good Boaz. In His field alone can you gather beyond the normal measure of peace, joy, faith, and love. At that field alone will a gleaner be made the owner. Dear child of God, it is a privilege to be in that field of Boaz, our redeemer Jesus Christ.

God Bless,

Rani John

  1. Oh Yes. Jesus is my Kinsman’s Redeemer. I have not only enough for me but I can share with others. I have joy, hope and peace. How blessed we are that He made us heirs in His Kingdom.
