Your Little Is Much In God’s Hands

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

   Ephesians 3:20-21

Yesterday, while I was reading my bible, the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, caught my attention. I knew that I have written few thoughts from this story before, but God kept reminding me something again and again the whole day and I felt that I need to write it today. So for today’s devotion, I would like you to read from the book of John, chapter 6. There we read that a large crowd followed Jesus to hear from him and also see the miracles He did. But Jesus was concerned about their physical need too and asked the disciples to find out the provisions to feed them. Jesus asked them that question to test them as He knew very well what He was about to do. WE all know the story..there was a lad with five loaves of bread and two fishes. And when he willingly gave those to Jesus, He multiplied the food and satisfied the crowd and there were 12 baskets of left overs.

I would like to draw your attention to the attitudes of the disciples and then Jesus. Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” (John 6:7-9). According to Philip, he could not think of providing for these many people. He looked more into the impossibility of that matter.

Andrew found out that there was a provision, but he doubted whether that was enough to satisfy the large need. But at least , he found out that there was a lad with five loaves and 2 fish and took that information to Jesus, even though he could not see in faith that Jesus could do a miracle with that.

Now lets look at Jesus and see how he reacted to that situation. He, even before performing the miracle, asked the people to sit down. Then He took the bread, gave thanks and distributed it among the people. One thing that amazed me was that even after all of them having enough, there were 12 baskets of food left over. Why is it mentioned so specifically in all the gospels? Some say that the number 12 is significant and the baskets were given to the 12 disciples. We do not know the truth behind that. But I believe that Jesus might have done that to wipe away their doubt…In a way, He might have been teaching them the lesson “He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you can ask or think”.

Do you expect a miracle in your life? A miracle happens when your need is more and your resources are less or none. So if you are going through a situation where you do not have enough to solve that issue of yours, or you do not know how to proceed next…then you are a candidate to experience a miracle from God. But you need to trust Him for that. When Jesus asked Philip, he could not see ways of provision. All that he saw was the impossibilities ahead. Looking at the great need in front of you, do you say “I dont think there is a solution for my problem”, or “I do not think that there is a better future for me in life”. Or are you like Andrew? When compared to the great need, the resource you have might be very negligible…but are you willing to hand it over to Jesus and trust Him to meet your need? Remember, every little is much in God’s hands.

I love what God did even before performing the miracle. He asked the people to sit down. Do you have that faith to forsee the result of a miracle even before youexperience it? If you are able to do that, then I would say that you have already received the miracle. Are we able to exercise our faith and see the things that are unseen at this moment? In the gospel of Mark, Jesus says, “When you pray believe that you have received whatever you ask for and it shall be yours.” Thats exactly what He did here. Jesus exercised His faith and gave thanks and distributed the little He had to the five thousand people. And they witnessed a great miracle. When God does a miracle in your life, He gives abundantly, exceedingly, above all that you can imagine or think. Even after all those hungry people ate and finished, there were 12 baskets of food left over…imagine..it was from 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.

So today, trust Jesus for a miracle in your life. Submit the little you have to Him. Exercise your faith and forsee in faith what you expect from God. Give thanks to God in advance for the blessing that you are going to receive from Him. And you will receive the miracle.. If you carefully notice the above verse, you see that God will do everything according to the power that works in us. Check what kind of power works in you? Do you have a doubtful mind? Do you have a fearful attitude looking at the great need in front of you? Cast away all that negative energy from you and visualise the impossibilties happening with the very little you have. It does not matter what you have, but it matters whose hand it is in. Once again, the little you have is much in Jesus’s hands.

In Him,

Rani John
