Shake It Off Into The Fire

If you make the Most High your dwelling— even the LORD, who is my refuge- then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

       Psalms 91:9-13

When I was a kid, my grand mother used to teach me this Psalm. She will force us to by-heart this Psalm so that every time I’m scared, I can remember the words of it. And it is one of my favourite Psalms. The confidence that you get when you read that Psalm is just amazing. No matter what comes against you, the provision and protection that our God provides is unthinkable. Most of the time, we just take that provision so lightly. We forget that we are given the power to tread upon lion and cobra…or the worst attacks of the enemy.

For today’s devotion, I would like to take your attention to an incident in Acts 28. There we read that Paul had been saved from a shipwreck and was safe in an island named Malta. The islanders showed them unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed them all because it was raining and cold. Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.” But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.(Acts 28:1-6)

One after the other , Paul was facing struggles in his spiritual life. He was just saved from a shipwreck. He was all wet and cold and the islanders built a fire for them. They were all watching Paul and his companions. They did not know anything about the Jesus whom Paul preached. So I believe that Paul must have considered this Island an opportunity to preach the Gospel. Satan cannot stand when souls are saved…when someone is used by God, he will try to attack that person. Paul faced the same. It was very unexpected to see the viper on his hands. Even though, Paul was not prepared, he was not scared. He did not shout nor did he call someone for help. He just shook it off into the fire and continued what he was supposed to do.

Today, I just want to remind you that Satan plans his attacks on you unexpectedly. But how do we react when he tries to hinder us from our daily walk with Jesus? Satan is so happy when you are a cold christian..He is least bothered as long as Gospel does not work in you and you are not used for the Kingdom of God. But, as soon as he realise that you are fired up and ready to do anything for Jesus, he will not remain silent. He will try his dirty tricks on you. When you decide to kindle the fire of Holy Spirit, when you decide to pray more, when you intercede more for others and when you start witnessing for Christ, he will come out of his hiding places. Satan trembles when you are fired up by the Holy Spirit. At that time, you will see snakes coming out of wood. Suddenly you may see people reacting differently to you..your partners behaviour changed..your kids acting so badly…these are all his tricks. Sometimes, he will turn your circumstances so unfavourable to you and put you in sickness.

If this could happen with Paul, we are no exceptions. But how do we react when Satan attacks us? But remember, Paul just shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no harm. That is the same thing we are supposed to do. Shake it off…but where?..if you shake it off to the ground, it can come back again..You need to shake it off into the fire..for that there should be a fire in front of you..all the time…That fire is nothing but the fire of Holy Spirit. You cannot just have the fire only on Sunday morning at church. You should have that fire of Holy Spirit every moment of your life. Only then can you shake off the snake and continue His work. Remember, knowingly or unknowingly, people are watching us..They are watching how we react to those attacks..give them the opportunity to know the God whom you serve. Shake it off…Whatever he brings on you..small or big..troublesome or not that dangerous…whatever it is…dont let it hang on you for long..throw him into the fire so that he will never bring that tactic on you again. For that your wood should not be wet…it should fire up. Ask Holy Spirit to fill you like never before. Some of us have to build a fire and some others have to rekindle the fire that has burned out…but all of us need that fire of Holy Spirit to keep us warm.So ask for it…crave more for the Holy Spirit.

God Bless,

Rani John
