Troubled…..Yet not distressed

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

              2 Corinthians 4:8-10

In few hours, 2009 is leaving us and we are going to welcome a new year. I still remember this day of last year. How fast are we moving from one year to the other? Today, I was looking back and thinking how God has led me and my family through this year. It was definitely not a smooth year for our family. I’m sure that you might have also faced few challenges and difficulties this year. We may have gone through so much, but what matters the most is how God was with us during those times and how we are today.

Due to the economic crisis, most of us faced financial problems and loss of jobs. Some of us had to go through sickness and treatments. Some were tormented by family problems and similar issues. Many had to go through losses in life. It may have been a difficult year for us. But on the last day of this year, I would like you to look at yourself and say this verse  “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”. And the reason for what and how you are today is not because you did not have to go through anything in life, but because God’s power was with you during those times. The same power which resurrected Jesus from the death, worked in you and me to make us what we are today.

The problems that you might have faced was more than enough to shatter you completely and abandon you to a life of depression. But, if you have victoriously overcome those challenges in life, then it is nothing but the power of Jesus working in our earthen vessels. Clay jars or earthen vessels are of no worth by itself. But what goes within those jars make it valuable. A jar of oil is more valuable than a jar of water. And a jar of wine is much more valuable than a jar of oil or water. These earthen vessels are always delicate. They can be easily broken and shattered. Even then, God poured His mighty power in us knowing that we are nothing but earthen vessels. What makes us worthy is the spirit that is within us. The same spirit that raised Jesus from the grave , was with you when you were shattered; not knowing what to do next. When you were abandoned by your loved ones, the same Holy Spirit comforted you. You and me were confused by the unexpected incidents of life, but He whispered His answers and led you through paths that you have never travelled before. He gave you opportunities and experiences in life to feel Him more closer to you. If all that we faced this year made you and me one step closer to Jesus, then I would say this year was awesome. Doesn’t matter the tears you shed, the fears you faced and the failures you expereinced…All that matters is that God is more real to you..you can feel Him, you can hear Him and you can experience His power in your life.

This blog is one of the wonderful thing God has done in my life this year. This would not have happened if I had not gone through a miscarriage in the middle of this year. If that loss never happened in my life, I would have delivered a baby next month and have been thinking about baby clothes and strollers. Never would have I written these many devotions. Many might have experienced the same thing in life, but God used that incident in my life to bring forth this plan of His. And I’m happy He made something good out of that terrible experience of mine.

In the same way, your experience is unique because His plans for you with that experience is different from others. He will not let anything happen to you without a purpose. So today, if you are looking back and  sadly saying ‘Ohh what a year’, I will encourage you saying ‘A year full of mighty plans specifically for you’. Thank God for His power that made you strong spiritually even after everything you suffered. So look back and thank God for everything He has made beautiful in His time.

In Him,

Rani John
