The Lord Watches Over You

He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you—  the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

       Psalms 121 : 3-5

Many times in my life, I have come across nights where I could not sleep at all. I will toss and turn and try my level best not to think about anything so that I will sleep immediately. But few times, I have listened to the whisper of the Holy Spirit asking me to get up and pray. And when I finish my prayer and get back to my bed, I have noticed that I could sleep like a baby.

I’m sure that you too might have come across such nights. Have you ever noticed that prayers in such midnight hours make greater impacts? You pray for things you have never prayed before. Most of the times, you feel that Holy spirit is fully controlling your prayer. You pray for people you have never met. And thats the reason why God takes away your sleep and call you by name to get up and pray.

In the Bible, we see in two occasions, where it is mentioned that the king could not sleep. First we see the King Ahasuerus in the book of Esther, chapter 6.”That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him”.(Esther 6:1)    If you read the previous chapter, you can see that Haman was plotting to kill Mordecai. Haman was proud about everything he recieved from the King and he hated Mordecai for not honoring him. So according to his wife and friend’s advice, Haman made gallows in front of his house to kill Mordecai. That night the king could not sleep. So he asked the people to read from the book of chronicles and they read from the exact portion where it was mentioned that Mordecai had saved the King’s life from two eunuchs, the doorkeepers. The King enquired the people what had done to Mordecai in return for his kindful deed and they said nothing. Immediately ,he decided to honour Mordecai and asked the same Haman who was planning to kill him, to make every arrangements to honor Mordecai. You know the rest of the story. That night, the king could not sleep for a reason..When injustice was planned against Mordecai, God could not keep silent. He took away the King’s sleep for some time. I always wonder, being a king, he could have asked for music to be played, or songs to be sung to allure him to sleep. Instead, he asked to read the book of chronicles….thats not a story book..its a historical register where events are recorded. And when they started reading it, their eyes were directed to the portion where it was said about Mordecai..It was not coincidence…It is the work of the God who neither slumber nor sleep and watched over Mordecai.

In Daniel, chapter 6:18, we read about another king who could not sleep.”Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep”. (Daniel 6:18) Let me briefly explain the context of this verse. Daniel, because God’s spirit was in him, excelled in everything he did and was highly distinguished above all the governors of the Kingdom of Darius. So the king placed him above everyone. All the other governors hated him and planned to find some charge against him. They knew that Daniel will not do anything against the law of God. So they planned to trap him by declaring a decree that all the poeple in that kingdom should worship the King, otherwise, they will be put to the den of lions. Daniel was put to the lion’s den for not obeying the decree. Though the king worked hard to help him, the decree could not be altered in anyway. Seeing this injustice, the king could not sleep. He fasted and avoided all entertainment and waited to see whether Daniel’s God will save him from the lion’s mouth. Here also, we see that the people who plotted against Daniel was punished in the same way they had planned to kill him. The king also made a decree that all the people of that Kingdom should tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. Our God could not take the injustice against Daniel, so he took away the King’s sleep and worked on his behalf. Daniel found favour in the King’s eyes and decided to deliver him and  the same time punish his enemies. It is the work of the God who neither slumber nor sleep and watched over Daniel.

Next time, when you are not able to sleep for no reason, think that there could be some reason behind it. Somebody, somewhere needs your prayer. The enemy is trying to plot against him/her through sickness, emotional stress, temptations, financial crisis or family problems. Thats how satan plots against the people of God. The enemy’s plan is to stop you from loving and witnessing God. Your sleepless night is not just coincidence. Get up and pray. Ask God to direct you in prayer. Even without waking you up from sleep, God can do wonders in that person’s life. But thats not how the spiritual kingdom works…He expects you to support and strengthen your brother in need through prayer.

God  is reminding me this verse from Mathew 26:40  “Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter”. Jesus expected his disciples to get up and pray with him in this last hour of his life. In verse 38 ,we read, “Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me”“.Jesus went to pray with that heavy burden. He might have asked them to watch in prayer, so that they will recieve the strength from God to live a life after Jesus’s death and to not fall into temptations.

Reflections

The Lord who watches over you will neither slumber nor sleep. He will not allow anything bad in your life which is against His will. God will act immediately. Without your knowledge, he will bring many people to their knees at the right time of need. And he will make you see miracles in a night’s time. Do not hesitate to get up when you are called to pray for someone in the middle of the night.

God Bless,

Rani John
